Being widowed and never remarrying may raise the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, according to a new study of genealogical data.

The research, presented Saturday (March 19) at the annual meeting of the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry, found that widowhood nearly doubled the risk of dementia in Utah citizens born between 1895 and 1930. The risk of Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia, was 2.17 times higher in people who had been widowed and never remarried.

“Radiation pill” sales surge

March 21, 2011 on 8:18 pm | In Uncategorized | Comments Off

Fears of radiation sickness stemming from the unfolding nuclear crisis in Japan have prompted a surge in US sales of potassium iodide.   Potassium iodide (KI), a salt, floods the thyroid gland with non-radioactive iodine which lessens the amount of radiation the gland can absorb.   Pharmacies do not generally carry KI, but several manufacturers have reported being out of stock.

The US government has a stockpile on hand in case of emergencies.

Here’s a link to a website with more information about iodine.
